Gym Acclimation Program

Written by Evan Schwerbrock, M.S. and designed by the AdaptX team, this three-week program is designed for individuals with Visual Impairments who are interested in joining a gym but unsure how to navigate the unfamiliar space.

Evan developed Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy shortly after earning his bachelor’s degree in health science. Within two weeks, he had massively impaired sight and had to figure out how to adapt to the gym and life with the new circumstances.

Evan continued on to receive his master’s degree in kinesiology, become a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a professor, personal trainer, and more. In 2020, he founded Cane and Able Fitness, a resource providing applicable and accessible health information to the blind of the world. Evan has helped people all over the world to problem solve and overcome the issues that come with low vision to live healthier, happier lives.

AdaptX flyer for the 'Free Gym Acclimation Program' features three smiling men, one in a blue shirt and cap holding a white cane. Bold white text highlights the free program for visually impaired individuals, with details on Google Docs and YouTube resources. Blue geometric accents and a weightlifter icon enhance the design.

Move to Improve SCI - Bulletproof Shoulders Program

Despite all the talk about “overuse injuries,” the typical wheelchair user more so suffers from deconditioning, insufficient shoulder mobility, and muscle imbalances. This program will take you through exercises that are ideal for wheelchair-users and will mitigate the risk of these common “overuse injuries.”

Tim Morris has a master’s degree in kinesiology and has been a personal trainer for nearly 20 years. He is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, a Pain-Free Performance Specialist, a high school physical education teacher, and head track and field coach.

He has coached hundreds of people of all abilities and at all levels – from Division 1 athletes to Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls, but mostly those with spinal cord injuries.
